Entry/Exit-System (EES)

Entry/Exit System (EES)

The Entry/Exit System (EES) is an automated EU-wide IT system for registering the entry and exit of third-country nationals staying in the Schengen Area for short-term visits of up to 90 days. In Austria, the system applies to international airports and airfields. The purpose of the EES is to modernise border controls, enhance security, and harmonise the recording of travel data. It is based on Regulations (EU) 2017/2226 and (EU) 2017/2225, as well as Regulation (EU) 2025/1534 concerning the gradual implementation of the system.

The implementation process began on 12 October 2025. From 10 April 2026 onwards, the system will be fully operational at all external borders of the Schengen Area. It will record all travellers from non-EU, EEA, and Swiss states who are either visa-required or travelling visa-free for short stays when entering or leaving any of the 29 Schengen countries.
